Hey Y'all! 8 Amazing Recipes You Might Not Know About

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL FIND IN THIS ISSUE OF HEY Y'ALL:

THE INTERNET HAS BEEN HARD THIS MONTH!
Because technology is not always our friend you might have missed some really amazing recipes this month! Here are 5 from South Your Mouth and 3 from my friend, Christy Jordan 😋

MY TOP 9 FAVORITE BOOK SERIES
Here are my favorites! What are yours? I'm looking for something good to read and would LOVE your recommendations!

WE EAT FISH STICKS TOO
My weeknight meal plan for feeding my busy family. Because we all need ideas. And yes, we eat fish sticks too.

THE INTERNET HAS BEEN HARD THIS MONTH!

Long time, no see!! I know it’s been a while since I’ve gotten a newsletter out to y’all but Lord, I’ve been busy! Plus me, Mama, Daddy and Brutus are all dealing with some medical junk too so that’s really waylaid my creative juices. If any of you would like to send some prayers, positive thoughts or other healing juju our way, I sure would appreciate it!

This week I wanted to recap some of the more recent recipes I’ve shared because...

A) They’re DELICIOUS and

B) Due to some pain-in-the-butt internet/website crud I’ve been dealing with (on top of everything else – Lord, when it rains it pours doesn’t it??) you may not have seen some of them and, more importantly, if you PINNED any of them to PINTEREST in the last month, those pins may not work for you.

I won’t bore you with the details but, in a nutshell, my site, which is a Blogger site, is now ‘secure’ (YAY – that’s a good thing!) which means one tiny little ‘s’ was added to my URL (‘s’ for secure… used to be http, now it’s https… anywho…) that tiny change made a bunch of my social tools go haywire.

And while I was trying to fix ALL THAT, Pinterest decided to make a change to their algorithms which inadvertently mucked up every single thing anyone on the planet pinned from a Blogger site. Everything that was pinned from my site over about a two-week period leads to a picture and nothing else – there’s no way to get to the recipe.

This was me all last week:

It’s fixed now but if you pinned anything from South Your Mouth or any other Blogger blog, those pins are likely bunk. I’m going to share the new stuff I posted this month so you can pin them again if you’d like (please do… everything you share from here helps me keep the lights on)!

And since we’re talking about ugly crying over website problems, let me tell you about my poor, sweet friend Christy Jordan over at Southern Plate. Bless her HEART (and I mean that in the real way, not the other way we Southerners sometimes say it). On Easter weekend her site was attacked and she had to take it down completely. Big cooking holidays are huge for us food bloggers so this was an absolute nightmare. She and her husband worked for DAYS to get things up and running again. Rest assured it was and still is completely safe for you but, my goodness, that had to be the worst Easter EVER!

So, I want to introduce you to Christy (though many of you probably already know her!) and ask you to show her some love. Go check out her Southern recipe website and find something good to eat!

MY TOP 9 FAVORITE BOOK SERIES

WHATCHYALL READING?? I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours!

I am an AVID reader. I’ve been putting myself to bed with a book since I was 8-yrs old. I’ve been struggling lately to find good books to read and I’d LOVE some recommendations if you have any!

I’m up for anything as long as it’s not TOO dark or depressing or raunchy (or if it’s going to be super sexy, I need it to be interesting too, ya know?). I don’t like to read things that make me want to hide my children or ugly cry or take a bath.

I have a soft spot for the preternatural as well (which really became obvious once I put this list together)!

To give you an idea of what I like and to share with you some book series I’ve enjoyed, here are a few of my favorites! Links lead to Amazon listings for the first book in each series

9 Book Series to add to your reading list!

The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon (my all-time favorite EVER)
Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages.

The Frankenstein Series by Dean Koontz
From the celebrated imagination of Dean Koontz comes a powerful reworking of one of the classic stories of all time. If you think you know the story, you know only half the truth. Get ready for the mystery, the myth, the terror, and the magic of…

The Clan of the Cave Bear Series by Jean Auel
This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love. Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear.

The Darkfever Series by Karen Marie Moning
MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks . . . until something extraordinary happens.

The Immortals After Dark Series* by Kresley Cole
Acclaimed author Kresley Cole introduces a sizzling new series with this tale of a fierce werewolf and a bewitching vampire -- unlikely soul mates whose passion will test the boundaries of life and death.

The Kay Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwell
Under cover of night in Richmond, Virginia, a human monster strikes, leaving a gruesome trail of stranglings that has paralyzed the city. Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta suspects the worst: a deliberate campaign by a brilliant serial killer whose signature offers precious few clues. With an unerring eye, she calls on the latest advances in forensic research to unmask the madman

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series by Stieg Larsson
Murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue combine into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel, the first in Stieg Larsson's thrilling Millenium series featuring Lisbeth Salander.

The Passage Series by Justin Cronin
An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival,The Passage is the story of Amy—abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions

Black Dagger Brotherhood Series* by JR Ward
Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn’t there before, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes to her at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of the Brotherhood and blood frighten her. Yet his touch ignites a dawning new hunger—one that threatens to consume them both...

*These two are pretty racy (OK, raunchy at times) but I enjoyed the storylines and didn’t get put off by the ultra-steamy parts.

  1. I wanted to let you know that I made your pineapple casserole for a dinner party yesterday to pair with the hostess' cider-glazed ham. It was super easy and quick to make and received rave reviews.

Thoroughly enjoy your site. Love all the family and work related stories.
You remind me of a young Erma Bombeck, except Erma was not what you would call, a great cook.
Speaking of Erma Bombeck, check out one or two of her books.
"At Wit's End", "I Lost Everything In The Post-Natal Depression", "The Ties That Bind . . . And Gag". Great reading after the little ones have retired for the night (don't forget a glass of your favorite libation!).
      Enjoy!

  6. You should check out Jodi Taylor's series on St. Mary's Institute on Historical Research where they " record and document historical events in contemporary time". But don't call it time travel. And yes, John Sandford's anything. There are so many...

I absolutely adore the Outlander series, it's my fav of all time! I was so happy when the Starz channel picked up the TV version - and they've stayed pretty close to the books as far as the storyline which is great!

If you like romance, vampires and werewolves, I would highly recommend the Relentless series by Karen Lynch. It's not too raunchy, but still has lots of romance - you'll fall in love with Sarah and Nikolas!

  9. Read Ivan Doig's "Last Bus to Wisdom" and "The Bartender's Tale". Last Bus is my all time favorite.

  10. Carolyn Brown and Kathleen Brooks books are good too. They have humor, romance and some suspense. Love your site!

  11. I have enjoyed JD Robb's Eve Dallas Series In Death about a NYC police detective of the future who is married to a handsome Irish millionaire, lives in a mansion, and whose husband can buy her anything she wants, but she never wants anything.Lots of action and love. #2 Anita Blake a bounty hunter who can talk to the dead and has a sexy relationship with a vampire and an alpha werewolf. Very good books

Hi there! While I’m not able to respond to every comment, I try hard to answer any questions that haven’t been addressed in the post, recipe or in other comments.

I can tell you now 1) I have no idea if you can substitute Minute Rice or brown rice in my recipes because I’ve never used them and 2) If I know how to convert a recipe to a Crock Pot version, I will make a note about it (otherwise, I don’t know).

And though I may not respond to them all, I do read each and every comment and I LOVE to hear from you guys! Thanks, y’all! - Mandy
